 Observation Cube
BIO 156

 4. Record at least ten observations (collect data) about the visible sides of the cube. Really look and observe any patterns that will help you answer your question. Do not hypothesize! Note that observations are made before a hypothesis is formulated. (1 point each)

1. The cube has 5 exposed sides.
2. The numbers on the white sides are even
3. The numbers on the blue sides are odd
4. Each exposed side has a name
5. The numbers in the upper right corner indicates the amount of letters in the names
6. The exposed sides have the numbers 2,3,4,5,6,7
7. The blue sides names have the same first three letters which also have the number 3 on the lower left side
8. The white sides names have the first two same letters which also have the number 2 on the lower left.
9. The red side or top of cube has both odd and even numbers.
10. The cube has the colors red, white, and blue.
11. All the numbers on the blue and white sides add up to even numbers.
12. The name lengths start at 3 letters and go to 7 letters
13. There are 2 blue sides, 2 white sides, and 1 red side

5. Based on your observations, formulate an answer to the question, such as, “The numbers on the bottom are X and X, the letters are XXXXX, and the color is X.” This is your hypothesis, a scientific prediction. (2 points)

The numbers on the bottom are 2 and 3. The letters are 3,4,5,6,7 characters in length. The colors are red, white, and blue.
   6. Write at least four sentences convincing your instructor your hypothesis is based on data, not feelings or hunches. That would not be doing science! The more observations you have that support your proposed explanation, the stronger the case for your hypothesis. An example: “We conclude there is a 2 in the upper right and a 10 in the lower left and the word “Superman” on the bottom because the pattern we observed on the other sides supported this in these ways…” In most cases, a scientist will never be able to look at the object of interest directly to confirm information, but I will show you the “answer” later. (8 points)

Observing the data on the cube shows us facts about the exposed sides. The question is what would be on the bottom of the cube according to our data and observations? We know there are 2 white sides and 2 blue sides. We can conclude that the bottom of the cube would be red in color due to the proven pattern of colors having even sides (2 each). The name on the bottom would start with the letters “FRAN” from the recorded observations made in questions 7,8 on top. The name would be 8 letters long (FRANKLIN) which would then prove that the number 8 would be in the upper right corner. The number on the bottom left would indicate the first 4 letters on the name are the same due to the pattern as well. So the number would be 4 on the lower left.
